I made the mistake of reading Carlson while having lunch.
LB, you made some solid comments over at waka.
Thanks, I get nervous posting over there, especially when it’s a lot of those academic types throwing around $10 words, which I have to look up to make sure I understand them correctly. I’m a very simple person and have often found that a lot of bs can be wrapped up in fancy terminology.. I actually learned this lesson, not in academia, but in the Army decades ago. There you’ll find the consummate bull-shitters, as evidenced by phrases like “shock and awe” or even something more esoteric as calling dead civilians, “collateral damage”, to sanitize, or perhaps, distance the human carnage of war and make it sound more “professional”.
A lot of bad ideas get dressed up and sold with important-sounding terminology, don’t you think?
I agree with you on wording and academic stuff. Academics have their place among the philosophers and such, but I never spent time there outside of 5 years of college. My writing is plain spoken as I write from my life’s experience here and elsewhere. Those who write big and eloquently are not always the actors and doers.
